Pada 3 April 1973, jurutera Motorola, Marty Cooper telah melakukan panggilan pertama melalui telefon bimbit. Cooper telah menelefon kawannya, Joel Engel yang sedang berada di Bell LAbs dan mengatakan "Joel, this is Marty. I'm calling you from a cell phone, a real handheld portable cell phone.". Panggilan telefon itu dilakukan pada telefon bimbit Motorola DynaTAC 8000x yang seberat 1.13kg.
